Permission to Be Visible: Who Actually Grants It

A specialist finishes a talk. Three people wait at the edge of the stage, and one of them says the sentence that gets said at the edge of almost every stage: "I have been meaning to write about this for two years." Two years of a working idea, held back, waiting for something to arrive first.

The thing being waited for usually has a name. A title. An invitation. A round number of years in the field. A senior colleague saying go ahead. The phrase professionals search for is permission to be visible.

Nobody Is Positioned to Grant It

The permission being waited on has no office and no signature. Professional bodies certify competence, they do not authorize publishing. Employers approve announcements, and authority is a separate matter. Senior colleagues are busy, and the ones who publish did so before anyone told them to.

Waiting is therefore an open-ended arrangement. The wait is often described afterwards in years, and the thing that ended it is almost never an authorization. It is a deadline: an invitation to speak, a job change, a client who asked for something in writing, a colleague publishing a weaker version of the same idea.

That last one is the most common and the most expensive. A field moves on a set of ideas, and the ideas that move it are the published ones, held by whoever wrote them down.

It is worth noticing what the waiting professional is implicitly assuming: that somewhere there is a register of people who are allowed to speak, and that being added to it precedes speaking. In practice the sequence runs the other way around. People are read as authorities in a field because a record of their thinking exists and holds up, and the record starts with a first piece that nobody sanctioned.

What the Request Is Actually For

Underneath the request for permission there is usually a narrower and much more answerable question: what is the standard. How good does a piece have to be before it can go out with my name on it, in a profession where my name is my working capital.

That version of the question deserves a serious answer, because the fear behind it is accurate. In expert fields, published work does get read by peers, and a sloppy piece does cost something. The problem with the permission framing is that it puts an unanswerable question in front of an answerable one, and the answerable one has a checklist.

The Standard, Written Down

A piece is publishable when all four are true.

• It is accurate. Every factual claim is one you would defend in front of the most demanding person in your field.
• It is bounded. It answers one question rather than surveying a whole domain, and it says where its answer stops applying.
• It is useful without you. Remove the byline and a reader in the situation described can still act on it.
• It is honest about certainty. What you know, what you suspect, and what you are still working out are marked as three different things.

Nothing on that list requires a title, a threshold of years, or an audience. It is a standard for the artifact, and an artifact can be checked. For most experienced professionals the surprising outcome of applying it is that work already sitting in a drafts folder clears it.

Worth saying plainly: for some people what is holding the work back is heavier than a missing checklist, and a written standard will not move it. Saying that outright is more useful than stretching four lines to cover ground they were never built for. What is on offer here is the craft layer, and for a large number of capable people the craft layer is the whole of the blockage.
